How to make a stop motion armature walk without having that board?

in stop motion, they usually use an armature, and screw the feet to the bottom when walking, but how do you do that without showing that board with the holes in it at the bottom?? like if i were filming a project and had to have the ground look normal and flat, but where would i screw the feet for stabilization??
